COME WALK WITH US is an inspiring and personal story which follows seafarer, Vicki Morta in her quest to become an advocate of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and the case for voting yes at the upcoming Referendum on a First Nations Voice to Parliament. With the mentorship of Thomas Mayo, the Maritime Union of Australia's National Indigenous Officer she embarks on a journey visiting family, Elders, a historian, politicians, fellow unionists and community organisations to explore the challenges ahead in the lead up to the national referendum.

Director’s Statement

The documentary was the concept of Thomas Mayo who approached the MUA Film Unit members, Fabio Cavadini & Mandy King about producing a film which follows the journey of Vicki Morta, a seafarer and union member in her quest to become an advocate of the Uluru Statement of the Heart and the Yes vote in the referendum for a First Nations Voice to Parliament. The intention is to give the trade union movement and other organisations the background to the maritime unions involvement and support for First Nations' struggles for recognition and land rights over almost a century. This history is explored as Vicki travels on an amazing journey across the country meeting family, Elders and others to talk about their feelings and experiences that underly the rationale for the representative Voice.

Reviews

It is so important to historicise and contextualise the Voice referendum to generate a broader understanding of the long political struggles that underpin this campaign.

It is also important to show the contemporary relevance the Voice campaign offers First Nations people, and the incredibly generous offer to all Australians to 'Come Walk With Us'.

This film portrays all this through a touching personal journey.
